Southeast Asia, by locals.

Southeast Asia is changing fast.

It is becoming a centre of geopolitical competition, technology, investment and global trade. New industries are emerging, old ones are being transformed, and a region of more than 700 million people is increasingly changing, while shaping the world around it.

But Southeast Asia is still mostly understood from the outside.

The ASEAN Frontier was founded to change that.

We are an independent, youth-driven publication covering international affairs, politics, economies, societies, and ideas shaping the region. Through a network of correspondents and contributors based across Southeast Asia, we bring local, grassroots perspectives, on-the-ground reporting, and unique analysis to a global audience.

Here at TAF, we don’t just ask what happened.

We ask why it matters, what comes next, and how the region sees it for itself.

A FRONTIER IS A PLACE OF CHANGE

We chose the name The ASEAN Frontier deliberately.

A frontier is where pre-existing boundaries clash with new possibilities. It is a space of movement, experimentation, and discovery.

That is Southeast Asia today, and that is who we are.

From Bangkok to Jakarta, Hanoi to Manila, and Singapore to Dili, the region is constantly shifting, reshaped by internal political changes, reconfiguring supply chains, digital transformation, demographic trends, climate pressures, and a rapidly evolving and increasingly unpredictable geopolitical landscape.

We follow those changes as they take place.

FROM THE REGION, FOR THE WORLD

Our network of correspondents is at the epicenter of our work.

Rather than choosing to view Southeast Asia from a single centre, we have brought together voices from every single country of the region- people who live, study, and work in the places they cover.

That means a story about Indonesia is told from the streets of Jakarta.

A story about Vietnam from Hanoi.

And a story about Timor-Leste from Dili.

The result is the first Southeast Asian publication that is entirely local, more nuanced, and more connected.

BEYOND THE HEADLINES

THE FRONTIER BRIEF

Our flagship, thrice-weekly briefing on the developments shaping Southeast Asia.

Politics. Society. Geopolitics. Technology. Economics.

The stories you need to know from the past week, and why they matter on the ground.

FRONTIER ANALYSIS

Our long-form analysis section features interviews and in-depth perspectives exploring the forces reshaping Southeast Asia.

Because some stories simply can’t be told in a couple of paragraphs.

THE FRONTIER NETWORK

Our constantly growing community of correspondents, contributors, and readers connected by a shared interest in Southeast Asia.

Because understanding a region this diverse requires more than one perspective.

WHY WE DO IT

Southeast Asia is no longer a region the world can afford to overlook.

Yet its story is still too often reduced to great-power competition, economic statistics, or occasional headlines.

We know there is much more to it.

There are societies experimenting with entirely novel models of development. Businesses rapidly building across borders. Governments struggling to navigate a changing global order. Young, passionate people reshaping politics, culture and technology. Communities confronting challenges that never make international headlines.

We believe Southeast Asia deserves to be understood on its own terms.

And we believe the best way to do that is to listen to the people who know it first-hand.
